What is Phlebotomy?

The term phlebotomy refers to the process of obtaining blood sample from the body for the purpose of diagnosis of any particular health condition by the means of various blood tests. The blood is obtained from the circulatory system though making an incision or puncture in a peripheral vein of the body and blood is drawn from the vein using a syringe.
The main purpose of phlebotomy procedure is to obtain blood samples from the body for analysis and diagnosis. However the process can also be employed as a treatment modality in certain cases like polycythemia vera in which the blood cell volume increases above the usual level. The process can also be used for the purpose of drawing blood from the body as in case of blood donation or blood transfusion.
The process of phlebotomy is extremely important especially when a patient is about to undergo a major surgery which usually requires blood transfusion and is performed by a trained professional.
